Convert ICO to PNG
An ICO bundles several sizes. Sometimes you need just one of them as a standalone PNG - for a web page, documentation, an app launcher, or a store listing. IconWorkshop opens the ICO and exports any size as an alpha PNG.
How to convert an ICO to PNG
- Open the ICO in IconWorkshop. Every size it contains is listed in the icon's format view.
- Select the size you need.
- Export that image as PNG. The alpha channel is preserved.
- Repeat for any other size, or export them all in one step.
Pull out every size, or process many icons
- Export a single size when you only need one image - a 32-pixel toolbar glyph, say.
- Export all sizes at once when you want the full set as separate PNG files.
- Use the File Explorer batch tools to extract PNG derivatives from a whole folder of icons.
- Going the other way? See Convert PNG to ICO.
Common questions
Which size should I export?
Match the target: 16 and 32 pixels for favicons and toolbars, 48 to 256 for web pages and documentation, and the largest available size for store or marketing art.
Is the transparency kept?
Yes. IconWorkshop exports alpha PNG, so the transparent areas of the icon are preserved in the extracted image.
Can I export every size, or many icons, at once?
Yes. You can export all sizes of an icon together, and the File Explorer batch tools export PNG derivatives from whole folders of icons.
